Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929)
Beethoven
Antoine Bourdelle was fascinated by Ludwig van Beethoven. During his career, he made eighty sculptures of the composer, using a wide variety of materials: bronze, granite, stone, marble, terracotta. Impressed by Beethoven's music, but also by his face, Bourdelle kept drawing, painting and sculpting him from 1887 on. Here is what he said of the musician: “Every cry, uttered by this deaf individual who heard God, directly struck my soul. Beethoven's forehead was sweating on my crushed heart”.
