This original plaster outlines the composition of a gilded bronze sculpture commissioned for the exterior of the Palais de Chaillot for the Exhibition of Arts and Technology in Modern Life (1937).

While Maillol's influence is still evident, Couturier introduces greater fluidity and freedom in his treatment of the figure.
