Many Small Cubes is the scale model of an ephemeral work created in 2014 for the Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain (International contemporary art fair), installed in the Jardin des Tuileries. This construction was made of a multitude of cubes of two sizes, some of which held various tree species. The suspension of the cubes, joined only on the cubes’ corners and ridges, gives a very aerial feel to this architecture. Each cube has an essential position in maintaining the sculpture’s structural integrity, and thus in maintaining life through the trees, Sou Fujimoto playing with questions of equilibrium to create a new relationship to space.

A Japanese architect, Sou Fujimoto created his studio in 2000, based between Tokyo and Paris. He gained widespread recognition as early as 2005 when he won the Architectural Review Awards International, an award that honors his creations which are in keeping with Japanese cultural heritage.
