Joan of Arc : a heroine at the Dungeon
You are standing in front of the Joan of Arc tower, commemorating the passage of this heroine of the Hundred Years War at Vez. In 1430, towards the end of the conflict, Joan of Arc rushed to Vez to protect the territory from the Duke of Burgundy, who threatened to seize several castles in the region to create a route from Flanders to his Burgundian domains. Joan of Arc stayed at Vez overnight, just a few days before being arrested not far from here, in Compiègne, by the Burgundians. They delivered her to their English allies, and her infamous execution took place in 1431.
She used the tower as an observation point. According to the legend, her soul still wanders in this place, where she experienced her last hours of freedom. In the chapel is a small oratory from where she would follow mass celebrations and meditate. She is also represented in armour on one of the stained glass panels inside the chapel. Make sure to have a look when you visit the Chapel.
